What is Stevioside

Stevioside is also regarded as the stevia sweetener as it is a glycoside derived from the stevia plant. Stevioside has been proven to be a no-calorie sweetener that can be used to lower one’s intake of added sugars while still providing satisfaction from enjoying the taste of something sweet. Thus, stevioside is also regarded as one sugar substitute and a high-intensity sweetener. For people who want to keep fit but can’t stop enjoying the sweet taste, stevioside can be as a good choice as other low-calorie sweeteners, such as monk fruit sweetener and erythritol.

Production Process of Stevioside

Stevioside or stevia sweetener is derived from a natural herbal shrub, the stevia plant. The history of using stevia plants for food and medicinal purposes dates back hundreds of years ago. Meanwhile, its leaves and crude extracts were regarded as a dietary supplement. With the progress of the times and the development of technology, people began to extract steviol glycosides from stevia leaves and purify them to remove their bitter components. As for steviol glycosides components, there’re stevioside and various forms of rebaudiosides, of which we use most commonly now is rebaudioside A (or reb A). There are also some steviol glycosides processed by bioconversion and fermentation technologies, which have better taste and less bitter rebaudiosides, such as reb M.

Safety of Stevioside

Based on the truth that steviol glycosides are not absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which is to say no calories will be produced and blood glucose levels will not be impacted. Once steviol glycosides reach the colon, gut microbes will cleave off the glucose molecules and use them as an energy source. The remaining steviol backbone is then absorbed via the portal vein, metabolized by the liver, and excreted in urine.

Relevant Regulations for Stevioside

According to leading global health authorities such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Food Standards Australia New Zealand, Health Canada, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS), and other authorities from more than 60 countries, the consumption of stevioside is safe.
